Poetry Conversation: Les Murray – the Ringing Planet
Talk
Les Murray (born 1938 Australia) belongs among a group of poets like Derek Walcott or Seamus Heaney. His verse epic “Freddy Neptune” is epoch-making.
His work possesses that mysterious quality, which Murray himself describes as “sprawl”: awkward in spirit, always with “one boot upon the rail of possibility”. In the conversation, Les Murray gives Margitt Lehbert – his publisher and translator – information about his poetic work and his longstanding companion, the “black dog”, depression.
